Improvisational slow-stitching became my anti-anxiety therapy to get me through the pandemic.
In today's fast-paced world, it can be challenging to find moments of calm and relaxation. However, by embracing the art of mindful stitching, you can slow down and reconnect with your inner peace.
Active Meditation
Hand stitching can be a powerful form of active meditation, providing benefits such as reduced stress and increased relaxation. The repetitive nature of stitching allows for a gentle focus, helping individuals let go of worries and distractions.
Hand stitching also cultivates patience and a sense of presence, promoting a deep connection with the present moment.
Focus on the Process
One of the key aspects of mindful stitching is the emphasis on slowing down and being present in the moment. When we rush through a project, our minds are typically focused on the end result, rather than the process. By taking the time to savor each stitch and pay attention to the sensation of the needle and thread moving through the fabric, we can cultivate a sense of mindfulness allowing us to let go of stress and worries.
Embrace Improvisation
Imagine sitting down with your needle and thread, and instead of focusing on producing a predetermined result, you embark on a journey of exploration. This mindset shift allows you to let go of any preconceptions and expectations, and instead invites curiosity and openness into your stitching practice. When you approach your work with a sense of playfulness, you create space for serendipitous moments of inspiration and surprise.
If you can thread a needle, then you can do this!
Mindful Stitching is about the concept of letting go of plans and expectations and embracing improvisation while using the running stitch as a form of meditation. This approach fosters a sense of artistic freedom, encouraging a deeper connection with your stitching while focussing on the process, rather than striving for perfection in the final result.
With Judy's guidance, using basic stitching techniques you will learn not only the technical aspects of slow stitching, but also how to use it as a tool for self-care and stress relief while creating stunning pieces of textile art.
